Zaķusala island is easily accessible and surrounded by long scenic waterfronts. It has a potential to become one of the most loved residential and recreational neighbourhoods of the city. Development proposes building 1500 new living units with full service of recreation, diversity and accessibility. New proposal focuses on reorganization of street lines. The main street – Zaķusalas Boulevard – would move deeper into the island, creating building plots on both sides towards the shoreline. New canals from the Mazā Daugava would double the shoreline and bring waterfront qualities just to the front of doorstep or balcony. Three local pedestrian friendly centres – “Public Platforms” are introduced to connect both coasts of the Zaķusala. Heights of the buildings vary from 3 floor high row houses next to the Mazā Daugava till up to 13 floors high apartment towers (as an urban accent) next to the Daugava promenade. Roofs of the towers are arranged to create attractive but not dominating silhouette. Different apartment building typologies are used to offer a variety of living conditions.
